境内のベンチで、のんびり日向ぼっこをしている猫がいました。

わたしが近づいても物怖じする様子はなく、目をうっすら開けては閉じ、日の光を味わうように毛づくろいをしています。

いいなぁ。

わたしも、人目も気にせず、こんなふうにぼーっとゆっくりしたい。

そう思ったということは、きっと日ごろ、ちゃんと「ぼーっとする時間」が取れていないのだと思いました。

でも、先週末のわたしは、ほとんど家にいました。

大きな用事を片付けたわけでもなく、家着のまま、化粧もせず、家でゆっくりしていたつもりでした。

昼下がりには、おやつを食べながら色鉛筆でのんびりボーっと絵を描く時間もあったし。

それなのに、なぜだろう。

ふと振り返ってみると、何かしらの考えごとを、ずっとしていたことに気づきました。

体は動かしていなくても、頭は休んでいなかった。

仕上げたい作品のこと。

なかなか浮かばないアイディア。

あぁでもない、こうでもない、と考え続けながら、子育てのこと、家族のことも一緒にぐるぐる。

それじゃあ、体も頭も休まらないわけだよなぁ、と納得。

温かいお日さまの光を感じながら、ただただ体をゆるめて、何も考えずに過ごす時間。

それも大事なんだにゃ。

そんなことを、あの猫ちゃん先生に教えてもらった、ある日の午後でした。

There was a cat basking lazily in the sun on a bench in the temple grounds.

Even as I approached, it showed no sign of being startled. It would open its eyes slightly, then close them again, grooming itself as if savoring the sunlight.

How nice.

I wish I could just zone out like that, without worrying about anyone seeing me.

The fact that I thought that made me realize I probably don’t get enough proper “zoning out time” in my daily life.

But last weekend, I was mostly at home.

I hadn’t tackled any major tasks. I stayed in my loungewear, didn’t put on makeup, and thought I was relaxing at home.

In the afternoon, I even had time to snack while idly doodling with colored pencils.

So why, then?

Looking back, I realized I’d been preoccupied with some thought or other the whole time.

Even though my body wasn’t moving, my mind hadn’t rested.

Thoughts about the piece I wanted to finish.

Ideas that just wouldn’t come.

I kept going over “this won’t work, that won’t work,” while thoughts about parenting and family swirled around too.

No wonder my body and mind couldn’t rest, I realized.

Time spent simply relaxing my body, feeling the warm sunlight, without thinking about anything. That’s important too. I felt like the cat taught me that.
