考え事をしながら、夕飯の準備をしていた日のこと。

その日は、夕飯だけじゃなく、家族みんなが大好きな「ぜんざい」を作ろうと、小豆を準備していました。

少し大きめのジャガイモを切りながら、ふと、どうでもいいようなことを考えていました。

「そういえば、わたしって、今まで包丁で指を流血するほど切ったことってないな。ちゃんと気をつけてきたってことなのかな」

そんなことを思った、まさにその瞬間。

ジャガイモのカーブに包丁を入れようとしたら、つるっと滑って、支えていた方の人差し指を思いきり切ってしまったのです。

あまりに突然で、しばらくの間、ただ血が流れる指をぼんやり見つめていました。

すると、

「ちょっと〜〜〜ママ〜〜〜！」

と声を上げて、中学一年生の次女が飛んできてくれました。

「大丈夫じゃないよね？ちゃんと押さえて、血を止めて!」

そう言いながら、迷いなく手当をしてくれて、続けてこう言ったのです。

「ママはそこに座って。料理、代わるから。私はまず、何をしたらいい？」

その日は、よりによってスパイスから作るカレーを作ろうとしていて、更にその横でぜんざいも作るつもりでした。

正直、頭の中では、

「次女にできるかな」
「工程、難しくないかな」

そんな気持ちもよぎりました。

でも、中学生だし。

なにより、こんなふうに自然に動いてくれているこの気持ちを、大事にしたいなと思ったのです。

わたしは椅子に座り、口頭で少しだけ伝えながら、あとはすべて次女に任せました。

初めて作る、スパイスからのカレー。

小豆からコトコト煮る、ぜんざい。

どちらも「楽しい!」と言いながら作ってくれて、出来上がったお料理は、驚くほどおいしくて。

ぜんざいは、塩加減がちょうどよく、やさしい甘さを引き立ててくれて、家族みんなが「おいしい!」とおかわりしました。

翌日用に取っておこうと思っていたのに、カレーもぜんざいも、鍋はきれいに空っぽになりました。

あの日、強く思ったのは、ときには、頼って、信じて、全部を任せてみることの大切さ。

普段のわたしは、つい先回りして口出ししてしまうけれど、相手を信じること。

そして、信じて任せた自分を、ちゃんと信じること。

そのことを、次女から教えてもらった一日でした。

指の傷は、正直なかなか痛かったけれど。

それ以上に、大事な気づきをもらえた、忘れられない夜になりました。

この日のことを、忘れたくなくて。

後日、次女が作ってくれたぜんざいを、色鉛筆で描きました。

上手に描こうとか、きれいにまとめようとか、日ごろの色々な余計なことは考えず、あの日の空気を思い出しながら、ただ手を動かしました。

つやつやの小豆、良い感じに焼き色を付けてくれたお餅、塩加減が絶妙でやさしい甘さを引き立たせてくれる。

甘すぎず、しょっぱすぎず。

わたしたち親子のようなぜんざいの塩梅は、毎日を生きる感覚にも、どこか似ている気がしました。

このぜんざいの絵は、甘さだけじゃなく、あの日の気づきまで一緒に閉じ込めた一枚です。

The balance of sweetness and saltiness is just like life itself.

One day, while lost in thought, I was preparing dinner.

That day, I wasn’t just making dinner; I was preparing red beans to make zenzai, a sweet red bean soup that the whole family loves.

As I was cutting a slightly large potato, I suddenly found myself thinking about something trivial.

“Come to think of it, I’ve never actually cut myself badly enough to bleed with a knife. I guess I’ve always been careful.”

The very moment that thought crossed my mind.

As I tried to slice into the curve of the potato, the knife slipped. It sliced right through the index finger of my supporting hand.

It happened so suddenly that for a moment, I just stared blankly at my bleeding finger.

Then,

“Heyyyyy—Mom—!”

My middle school freshman daughter came running over.

“You’re not okay, are you? Hold it tight and stop the bleeding!”

She said this while applying first aid without hesitation, then continued:

“Mom, sit down over there. I’ll take over the cooking. What should I do first?”

That day, of all days, I was planning to make curry from scratch with spices, and I also intended to make zenzai (sweet red bean soup) alongside it.

Honestly, thoughts flashed through my mind:

“Can she handle this?”
“Is the process too complicated?”

But she’s a middle schooler now.

More than anything, I wanted to cherish this feeling of her stepping in so naturally.

I sat down in a chair, gave her a few verbal instructions, and then left everything else to her.

Curry made from scratch with spices.

Zenzai simmered slowly from adzuki beans.

She made both while exclaiming, “This is fun!” And the finished dishes were surprisingly delicious.

The sweetness of the zenzai was just right, and the whole family exclaimed, “Delicious!” and had seconds.

I’d planned to save some for the next day, but both the curry and the zenzai pots were completely empty.

That day, I felt strongly how important it is sometimes to rely on someone, trust them, and let them handle everything.

Usually, I tend to jump in and give advice, but trusting the other person…

And trusting myself for having trusted and let go.

That was the lesson my second daughter taught me that day.

Honestly, the cut on my finger hurt quite a bit.

But more than that, it became an unforgettable night where I gained a precious realization.

I didn’t want to forget this day.

Later, I drew the zenzai my second daughter made for me with colored pencils.

The glossy red beans, the mochi with just the right golden brown color, the perfect saltiness that brought out the gentle sweetness.

I felt it was just like our mother-daughter balance.

I didn’t think about drawing it perfectly or making it look neat—all those usual unnecessary thoughts. I just moved my hand, recalling the atmosphere of that day.

As I drew, a gentle warmth spread deep within my chest, stronger than the pain in my fingers.

“I’m glad I trusted and let go.”
“She’s growing up just fine.”

Those feelings blended into the colors.

This painting of zenzai isn’t just about sweetness; it’s a piece that captures that day’s realization too.
